Hobo Stew Creation

Items Needed:

  • Paper and pencil (for writing meal ideas)
  • (Optional) printed cards or pictures showing canned ingredients
  • (Optional) Bring canned foods for examples:
    • Beans (black, kidney, baked)
    • Corn
    • Diced tomatoes
    • Mixed vegetables
    • Potatoes
    • Canned chicken or beef
    • Canned chili
    • Canned soup or pasta

Instructions (Total Time: 10–25 minutes):

  1. Brainstorm with Examples (10–12 minutes)
    • Briefly explain: Canned foods are easy to use on a camping trip. Hobo stew is made by mixing different cans together into one tasty meal.
    • Show or list 3–4 example mixes scouts could use as a starting point:
      • Option 1: Corn, beans, and diced tomatoes
      • Option 2: Mixed vegetables, potatoes, and canned chicken
      • Option 3: Chili with extra beans and corn
      • Option 4: Beanie weenies and diced tomatoes or tomato sauce
      • Option 5: Canned baked beans and canned chili with meat
    • Scouts choose one they like or mix their own combo
    • Scouts plan how many cans they would need to feed everyone at a campout.
    • Decide if any side dishes that need to be included.
  2. (Optional) Taste-test a Camp Meal (10–12 minutes)
    • If a microwave is available, simply use the canned goods you brought and stir in a bowl and heat in a microwave to taste test their choice.
