Urban hikes are a fantastic way to explore the local environment, promote physical activity, and foster curiosity.
Items Needed
- Comfortable walking shoes for all participants
- Weather-appropriate clothing (e.g., hats, jackets, sunscreen)
- Water bottles
- Snacks or trail mix
- First aid kit
- Maps or a navigation app
- Notebooks and pens (optional, for observations or journaling)
- Permission slips (if required)
Instructions
- Choose a safe, accessible route starting from your usual meeting location. Look for sidewalks, parks, or landmarks to explore. Consider the group’s age and fitness level when deciding the distance and difficulty. Check for facilities like restrooms and water fountains along the way.
- Brief the scouts on the purpose of the hike and what they’ll be doing (e.g., observing nature, learning about local history). Discuss safety rules, such as staying together, crossing streets safely, and being aware of surroundings.
- Pack Essentials: Ensure everyone has water, snacks, and weather-appropriate gear. Bring a first aid kit and any necessary emergency contact information.
- (Optional) Begin with a warm-up to get everyone moving and energized.
- Lead the group at a steady pace, ensuring no one is left behind. Assign a leader at the front of the line and a “sweep” at the end of the line to keep the group together.
- Encourage scouts to observe their surroundings. They can look for interesting plants, animals, or architecture. Incorporate activities like a scavenger hunt, journaling, or photography to make the hike interactive.
- Schedule short breaks for water and snacks. Use this time to discuss what the scouts have observed or learned so far.
- End the hike at a safe location, preferably back at the starting point. Reflect on the experience with the group. Ask scouts to share their favorite moments or discoveries.
- (Optional )Encourage scouts to document their hike in a journal or create a small presentation about what they learned. Consider awarding a fun patch or badge to commemorate the activity.
