Guest Cultural Dancer

Activity Description: Scouts learn a dance from another culture by moving to music and following a guest speaker who shares the tradition and meaning behind it.

Info Needed: Scouts explore how music makes them feel by dancing and moving to different songs.


Items Needed:

  • Guest speaker to teach dance from a different culture
    • Guest should able to share a little about their culture and the history of the dance (when, where, why, and what makes it special).
  • Music-playing equipment (speaker, phone, etc)
  • Computer, tablet, or smartphone (if guest is virtual)

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 20–43 min):

  1. Meet the guest and learn the background (5–7 min)
    • Introduce the guest who will be teaching a dance from a different culture.
    • Guest shares a little about their culture and the history of the dance (when, where, why, and what makes it special).
  2. Try the dance together (10–30 min)
    • Scouts follow along with the guest to learn and perform the dance. Movement can be fast, slow, standing, or seated depending on the dance.
  3. Reflect on the experience (5–6 min)
    • Scouts talk about what they enjoyed, what was different from other dances, and how they used their bodies to move.
    • (Optional) Scouts draw the dance steps or a costume they imagine goes with the music.
