GSUSA Rededication – We Believe

Ceremony Description:
A rededication ceremony using affirmations and candle symbolism to reflect core Girl Scout values.

Items Needed:

  • Flag for presentation
  • (Optional) Candles or symbolic items for each affirmation
  • (Optional) Songbooks or printed lyrics for “When’er You Make a Promise”

Before the Ceremony:

  • Assign speaking parts to scouts
  • Review the Girl Scout Promise with all scouts
  • (Optional) Prepare music or lyrics for closing song

Formation:

  • All scouts stand together in a semi-circle or horseshoe
  • Scouts with speaking parts stand in order near the front

Ceremony Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 10 min):

  1. Begin with presentation of colors. (1 min)
    • Flag is presented by designated scouts.
  2. All scouts say the opening affirmation. (1 min)
    • All scouts:
      We believe.
  3. Scout 1 shares their affirmation. (1 min)
    • Scout 1:
      In the sacredness of the Promise, a scout’s word accepted without doubt. That character, not power nor position, is of extreme importance.
  4. All scouts repeat the affirmation. (1 min)
    • All scouts:
      We believe.
  5. Scout 2 shares their affirmation. (1 min)
    • Scout 2:
      That a dedication to the rendering of service is the common duty of humankind. That only in the fire of unselfish sacrifice is selfishness consumed.
  6. All scouts repeat the affirmation. (1 min)
    • All scouts:
      We believe.
  7. Scout 3 shares their affirmation. (1 min)
    • Scout 3:
      That every right implies responsibility, every opportunity an obligation.
  8. All scouts repeat the affirmation. (1 min)
    • All scouts:
      We believe.
  9. Scout 4 shares their affirmation. (1 min)
    • Scout 4:
      That keeping physically fit and mentally alert develops a keen sense of responsibility for one’s self and a concern for others.
  10. All scouts repeat the affirmation. (1 min)
    • All scouts:
      We believe.
  11. Scout 5 shares their affirmation. (1 min)
    • Scout 5:
      That in helping other people we will help ourselves.
  12. All scouts rededicate themselves and recite the Girl Scout Promise. (1 min)
    • All scouts:
      Together we rededicate ourselves to the Girl Scout Promise.
      On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law.
  13. Sing “When E’er You Make a Promise”. (1 min)
    • All scouts sing together.
