GSUSA – Meeting Openings

Troop Meetings usually have an Opening Ceremony, Opening Routine, or a specific way to signal the official start of the meeting.

See our full list of Opening Routine Options here.

GSUSA recommended (in the 1984 Daisy Girl Scout Leaders’ Guide) to always have set routine and keep to it consistently. GSSN currently has this document for advice on opening and closing.

An opening may have:

  • Reciting the Girl Scout Promise and/or Law
  • Reciting the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance
  • A short Flag Ceremony
  • A Song
  • Important Announcements

Some may extend the Opening to include a sharing time moment:

  • Good News moment – each scouts says one good thing that happened since they met last
  • Show and tell – each scout shares a small item they brought and tells about it
  • Q & A – A question for all the troop is given and each scout answers it to help everyone know more about themselves (i.e. “What’s your favorite dessert?” or “What outdoor activity do you love?”)
