Fulfills Step 4 of GSUSA Cadette Netiquette badge requirements.
Items needed
- Pens or pencils
- Paper (enough for at least one per scout)
- Index cards (optional)
- Scissors (optional)
- Wi-Fi or cable-connected devices (laptops, tablets, or phones) for research purposes
- Each scout should be able to access a personal social media account
Before the Meeting
- Scouts decide which social media profile they want to share and, if possible, use the same application for the activity. All scouts must have a profile made before the start of the meeting.
Instructions
- Pass out index cards to each scout, ensuring they receive as many cards as there are scouts in the group. If index cards aren’t available, provide paper to cut or tear into smaller pieces.
- Scouts review each profile individually using shared devices. They focus on two things they think the person is interested in and two things they think the person dislikes. Ensure the observations are based solely on the profile, not on personal knowledge of the individual.
- Start the activity by using your own profile as an example. Scouts write your name on an index card, then note two interests and two dislikes based on your profile. Collect the cards when finished.
- Each scout volunteers to share their profile one at a time, repeating the process for interests and dislikes until all profiles have been reviewed.
- After all cards are completed, scouts gather their index cards and take a few minutes to review what their profiles communicate about their likes and dislikes.
- Discuss any surprises or misconceptions in the observations. Scouts evaluate whether their profiles give the impression they intended and consider reasons for the feedback they received.
- Scouts decide if they want to adjust their profiles to better match their intended impressions.
