Grab and Sort Wants and Needs

Items Needed:

  • 10–15 small everyday objects (or printed/drawn pictures) — mix of wants and needs
Examples: toy, toothbrush, snack, jacket, phone, book, cupcake, water bottle, socks, stuffed animal
  • Two bins, baskets, or labeled sheets of paper: one for “Wants”, one for “Needs”

Instructions (Estimated Time: 8–10 minutes):

  1. Set Up the Space (2 minutes)
    • Place all items in a pile on the floor or table.
    • Label two sorting areas: “Wants” and “Needs.”
  2. Sort It Out (4–5 minutes)
    • One by one, scouts grab an item, decide if it’s a want or a need, and place it in the correct spot.
    • If they’re unsure, they can leave it aside or ask the group.
  3. Quick Reflection (2–3 minutes)
    • Ask:
      • Were there any tricky items?
      • Did anyone change their mind during sorting?
      • Can something ever be both a want and a need?
