Garden Movement

Activity Description: Scouts use movement to explore nature while helping with or mimicking simple gardening tasks outdoors.

Info Needed: Scouts learn how physical activity can be fun and creative, especially with plenty of space to move. They use their bodies to explore nature through gardening activities to experience outdoor movement and learn how taking care of plants can be fun.

Items Needed: Supplies will vary based on the activity.

  • (Optional) Small shovel, rake, or garden tools
  • (Optional) Soil, flower pots, or garden bed
  • (Optional) Seeds or plants
  • (Optional) Watering cans or bottles
  • (Optional) Gloves

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 20–30 min):

  1. Choose a gardening activity (3–5 min)
    • Decide what the scouts will do: plant seeds, rake leaves, water flowers, pull weeds, or dig.
    • Make sure the activity is safe and fits each scout’s abilities.
  2. Go outdoors and get moving (10–15 min)
    • Scouts take part in the gardening task. Encourage them to notice nature (birds, bugs, wind, sun, smells).
    • They can bend, stretch, scoop, or tip-toe around flowers as they work.
  3. Reflect on the activity (5–7 min)
    • Talk about how gardening made their bodies feel. Ask what they liked noticing outside.
    • (Optional) Compare what it would be like doing the same activity indoors.
