Games – Target Ball

Fulfills Step 4 of GSUSA Junior Practice with Purpose badge requirements.

Info Needed for Badge Requirements:
Drills help scouts improve specific skills in their chosen sport or activity. Practicing drills regularly builds strength, coordination, and confidence over time.

Items Needed:

  • Large play space (indoors or outdoors)
  • Soccer ball or kickball
  • 3 cones, water bottles, or other small targets (stuffed animals work too)

Instructions (Total Estimated Time: 30 minutes):

  1. Set Up and Choose Roles (5 minutes)
    • Scouts divide into groups of three
    • Assign one scout to each role: roller, kicker, retriever
    • Place three targets a few feet apart across the play area
  2. Run the Target Drill (10–12 minutes)
    • The roller gently rolls the ball to the kicker and calls out which target to aim for
    • The kicker kicks the ball toward the selected target and tracks how many they hit
    • The retriever collects the ball and returns it to the roller
    • After 6 turns, scouts rotate roles until each scout has a chance to be the kicker
  3. Add a Challenge Round (8–10 minutes)
    • Try new challenges for more focus and movement:
      • Move the roller farther away from the kicker
      • Move the kicker farther from the targets
      • Use smaller or harder-to-hit targets
