Games – Scout Says Move Like an Animal

Activity Description: Scouts use a theme of an animal movement to follow commands only if prefaced by “Scout says.”

Info Needed for Animal Observer: Explore how animals move, hide, and communicate by mimicking behaviors through observation-based games.

Info Needed for Fun With Movement: Learn how physical activity can be fun and creative, especially with plenty of space to move. They play a movement-based game by following animal-inspired instructions, practicing body control, creativity, and listening skills.

Items Needed:

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 20–30 min):

  1. Prepare the space (2–3 min)
    • Choose a large area indoors or outdoors with space to jump, stretch, and wiggle.
    • Make sure scouts have room to move safely.
  2. Play “Scout Says…Move Like an Animal!” (12–18 min)
    • Lead a game where you give instructions that start with “Scout Says…” followed by an animal movement. Examples:
      • “Scout Says…hop like a frog”
      • “Scout Says…flap like a bird”
      • “Scout Says…crawl like a bear”
    • If you don’t say “Scout Says,” anyone who follows the action is out, but they can still keep playing for fun.
    • Scouts may also say “PASS” if they prefer not to do a movement.
  3. Reflect on the movements (5–7 min)
    • Talk about how their bodies moved during the game.
    • Ask which animal was the silliest, most fun, or hardest to pretend.
