Games – Look Up, Look Down

Items Needed

  • None (just the group and their creativity!)

Count to Three Instructions

  1. Scouts stand or sit in a circle with their heads down.
  2. Count to three. On the count of three, each Scout looks up and makes eye contact with one other Scout.
    • If two Scouts are looking at each other, both are out of the game.
    • If a Scout does not make eye contact with the person they’re looking at, they stay in the game.
    • Note – Each Scout decides who to look at without knowing if that person will also look at them. This creates a sense of surprise when two Scouts end up making eye contact.
  3. Continue playing until only one or two Scouts remain.

Command Instructions

  1. Gather all Scouts in a circle, ensuring everyone can see each other’s eyes.
  2. Explain the two repeated instructions:
    • “Look Down”: Everyone looks down at the ground.
    • “Look Up”: Everyone looks up, making eye contact with someone else in the circle.
  3. When looking up, two possible outcomes occur:
    • If a Scout looks at someone who is looking elsewhere, nothing happens.
    • If a Scout makes eye contact with someone who is also looking at them, both Scouts point exaggeratedly at each other and let out a scream or yell. These Scouts are now “out” and step outside the circle to observe.
  4. Once the “screamers” leave the circle, the remaining Scouts close in to make a smaller circle.
  5. Repeat the “Look Down” and “Look Up” steps until only two Scouts remain. Note – some will be determined to play one final round, even though the outcome is obvious!
