Games – Lifelines

Items Needed

  • Blank sheets of paper (one per scout)
  • Markers, crayons, or colored pencils
  • (Optional) Pipe cleaners for a 3D version of the activity

Instructions

  1. Give each scout a sheet of paper and markers, crayons, or colored pencils. Alternatively, provide pipe cleaners if creating 3D lifelines. Explain that scouts will create a “lifeline” to represent the highs, lows, and key moments in their life so far. For younger scouts, use examples relevant to their age, such as:
    • Highs: Starting kindergarten, joining scouts, learning to ride a bike, going on a fun trip.
    • Lows: Falling off their bike, losing a toy, feeling scared on the first day of school.
  2. Scouts should draw a line across the paper, marking highs (peaks), lows (dips), and other events in between with symbols, drawings, or simple words. If using pipe cleaners, scouts can shape a 3D line by bending and twisting the pipe cleaners to represent ups and downs.
  3. Once completed, have scouts share their lifelines with the group or in smaller pairs, explaining three parts (two highs and one low). It is best to set a limit of how much they share or you might get a life story for each scout. Encourage others to ask questions and discuss each other’s lifelines respectfully.

Variations

  • Future Lifeline: Ask scouts to add projections for the future, such as goals or events they’re excited about (e.g., finishing a grade, learning a new sport, visiting a favorite place).
  • Themed Lifeline: Focus on a specific theme like “school,” “family,” or “scouting adventures” to help younger scouts focus on simpler aspects of their experiences.
  • Group Lifeline: Instead of individual lifelines, create a group lifeline that represents shared experiences and milestones within the troop.
  • Artistic Interpretations: Allow scouts to draw or create their lifelines as abstract patterns or shapes instead of lines, encouraging creative self-expression.
