Form, Function, Fit

  • Helps understand Step 4 of GSUSA Brownie Craft and Tinker badge requirements.
  • Helps understand Step 3 of GSUSA Junior Craft and Tinker badge requirements.

In a nut shell:

  • Form: What something looks like—its size, shape, weight, and color.
  • Fit: How the parts work together and how well it fits its purpose or user.
  • Function: What the object does or the problem it solves.

GSUSA Volunteer Toolkit (VTK)

“Have you ever worn a sun or winter hat? What’s the difference? Both hats protect your head, but they have different functions. Sun hats are best on a sunny day. Winter hats help keep you warm when it’s cold. They have different shapes, or forms, that affect how they function. Form is what something looks like. It’s the object’s size, shape, weight, and color. All the parts and features of an object also need to fit together, like a hat on a person’s head, to function and be easy to use. When makers craft, considering form, fit, and function helps them create something that best solves the problem.”
