Fulfills Step 5 of GSUSA Brownie Automotive Design badge requirements.
Items Needed:
- Aluminum foil (enough for each scout to build a vehicle model)
- Scissors (optional, for cutting shapes)
- Markers (for adding details after shaping)
- Scrap paper & pencils (for sketching ideas before sculpting)
Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 20–25 minutes):
- Step 1: Build the Base Shape (5–7 minutes)
- Start with the main body. Tear or cut a piece of foil large enough for the shape of the vehicle.
- Gently fold or crumple the foil to match the basic outline from the sketch.
- Step 2: Add Vehicle Parts (10–12 minutes)
- Shape the details.
- Roll foil into cylinders or flat pieces for wheels.
- Fold or pinch areas to create doors, windows, headlights, or special features.
- Layer pieces to build raised sections like seats inside or bumpers outside.
- Shape the details.
- Step 3: Refine & Customize (5–6 minutes)
- Smooth or shape edges using fingers or scissors.
- Use markers to add colors, logos, or trim once the shape is complete.
Bonus Challenge:
- Create a hinged door or moving wheels using foil layering.
- Design a futuristic version with new technology features.
Tips for First-Time Foil Sculpting:
- Start simple – Crumple foil lightly to create a sturdy base, then refine details.
- Build in layers – Stack or fold foil pieces to create raised sections.
- Use soft pressure – Press gently to shape, avoiding tearing.
- Experiment! – Try shaping by rolling, folding, or pinching until it looks right.
