Foil Auto Models

Fulfills Step 5 of GSUSA Brownie Automotive Design badge requirements.

Items Needed:

  • Aluminum foil (enough for each scout to build a vehicle model)
  • Scissors (optional, for cutting shapes)
  • Markers (for adding details after shaping)
  • Scrap paper & pencils (for sketching ideas before sculpting)

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 20–25 minutes):

  1. Step 1: Build the Base Shape (5–7 minutes)
    • Start with the main body. Tear or cut a piece of foil large enough for the shape of the vehicle.
    • Gently fold or crumple the foil to match the basic outline from the sketch.
  2. Step 2: Add Vehicle Parts (10–12 minutes)
    • Shape the details.
      • Roll foil into cylinders or flat pieces for wheels.
      • Fold or pinch areas to create doors, windows, headlights, or special features.
    • Layer pieces to build raised sections like seats inside or bumpers outside.
  3. Step 3: Refine & Customize (5–6 minutes)
    • Smooth or shape edges using fingers or scissors.
    • Use markers to add colors, logos, or trim once the shape is complete.

Bonus Challenge:

  • Create a hinged door or moving wheels using foil layering.
  • Design a futuristic version with new technology features.

Tips for First-Time Foil Sculpting:

  • Start simple – Crumple foil lightly to create a sturdy base, then refine details.
  • Build in layers – Stack or fold foil pieces to create raised sections.
  • Use soft pressure – Press gently to shape, avoiding tearing.
  • Experiment! – Try shaping by rolling, folding, or pinching until it looks right.
