Exercise Video Teams

Fulfills Step 5 of GSUSA Junior Practice with Purpose badge requirements.

Info Needed for Badge Requirements:
Scouts create and follow a personal practice routine for one month that includes endurance, strength, and skill drills. Each part should be completed at least twice a week, in any order or combination that works best. After one month, scouts choose one way to reflect and share their progress.

Items Needed:

  • At least 4 phones or tablets with video recording capability (one per group)
  • One playback device for group viewing (or rotate recording devices for video sharing)
  • Open space for movement
  • Optional: paper and pencil for planning roles and talking points

Instructions (Total Estimated Time: 30–45 minutes):

  1. Form Video Teams and Select an Exercise (5 minutes)
    • Scouts break into small teams of 3–4
    • Each team votes to choose one exercise to demonstrate (e.g., squats, pushups, lunges, jumping jacks)
    • Teams assign roles:
      • One scout to perform the exercise
      • One scout to film
      • One scout to explain the movement and the common mistake (may be on camera pointing or narrating)
  2. Record a Short Demo Video (10–12 minutes)
    • Each team creates one continuous clip (1–3 minutes long) that includes:
      • A correct demonstration of the chosen movement
      • An example of a common mistake
      • Spoken advice or visuals pointing out the differences and tips
    • No editing required; record all parts in one take
  3. Watch and Share Videos (8–12 minutes)
    • Teams rotate devices or use a central playback setup to view each other’s demos
    • Scouts pay attention to clear demonstrations, helpful tips, and how mistakes are addressed
  4. Group Discussion (3–5 minutes)
    • After all videos have been watched, scouts reflect on:
      • What they learned from the other teams
      • Which tips were most helpful
      • How they’ll apply this knowledge to future practice
