Exercise Slideshows

Fulfills Step 5 of GSUSA Junior Practice with Purpose badge requirements.

Info Needed for Badge Requirements:
Scouts create and follow a personal practice routine for one month that includes endurance, strength, and skill drills. Each part should be completed at least twice a week, in any order or combination that works best. After one month, scouts choose one way to reflect and share their progress.

Items Needed:

  • One device per team to take photos (camera, phone, or tablet)
  • One device per team to build a slideshow (laptop or tablet with software like PowerPoint, Google Slides, or a free app)
  • Open space for movement
  • Optional: paper and pencil for planning
  • A leader device to show all slideshows to the group

Instructions (Total Estimated Time: 30–50 minutes)

  1. Form Teams and Choose an Exercise (5 minutes)
    • Scouts divide into teams of 3–5
    • Each team selects one exercise to demonstrate in a photo slideshow (e.g., squats, pushups, lunges, jumping jacks)
    • Teams assign roles: photographer, mover, speaker/writer, and designer
  2. Take Photos and Write Tips (10–12 minutes)
    • Teams take 3–4 photos showing the correct way to do the movement
    • They take at least 1 photo showing a common mistake (demoed safely and slowly)
    • Teams write short captions or descriptions for each photo, including:
      • What the movement is
      • How to do it correctly
      • What the mistake is and why it’s incorrect
  3. Create the Slideshow (10–15 minutes)
    • Teams build a photo slideshow using free software or apps
    • Limit each slideshow to 5–6 slides to keep it short (1–3 minutes when presented)
    • Include photos, captions, and optional title or summary slide
  4. Group Viewing and Discussion (5–15 minutes)
    • Teams rotate through watching each slideshow or the leader projects them for the full group
    • After viewing the slideshows, scouts discuss:
      • Which tips were most helpful
      • What they learned from each exercise
      • How they’ll apply it to future movement
