Equality vs Equity Boo Boos

Fulfills Step 2 of GSUSA Daisy Petal – Honest and Fair badge requirements.

Items Needed

  • Band-aids in various shapes and sizes (normal, fingertip/knuckle, large for knees, small for tiny cuts)
  • (Optional) Printout of VTK Equality Vs Equity by GSUSA

Instructions

  1. Explain Band-Aid Uses – Show the different types of band-aids and explain that each size is for a specific kind of injury.
  2. Assign Band-Aids – Ask each scout to think of an imaginary injury (e.g., a cut on their finger or a skinned knee). Give every scout a normal-sized band-aid, placing it on their imaginary injury.
  3. Discuss Equality – If a scout questions why they didn’t get a different-sized band-aid, explain that everyone got the same band-aid because that is equality.
  4. Introduce Equity – Talk about how the right band-aid should match the type of injury, which is called equity—giving each person what they need for their situation.
  5. Reflection – Discuss how it felt to have the same band-aid, even if it didn’t fit their imaginary injury. Ask for other examples where treating everyone equally might not be the fairest choice. Offer prompts like food allergies, learning needs, or tools made for specific activities. (Optional) Use the printout of VTK Equality Vs Equity by GSUSA
