Items Needed

  • A local entrepreneur or innovator joins the meeting in person
  • Paper
  • Pencil or pen
  • Craft materials for prototyping (cardboard, string, tape, glue, scissors, rubber bands, etc.)
  • (Optional) Picture books, magazines, or internet access for additional inspiration

Instructions (Total Time: 40–50 minutes)

  1. Welcome the Guest Speaker (10–12 minutes)
    • The guest shares a story or example of how they created a product or started a business
    • Scouts ask questions and take notes on ideas they find interesting
    • Thank the Guest Speaker and allow them to leave unless they are willing to help with the rest of the meeting activities.
  2. Brainstorm an Idea (5–8 minutes)
    • Scouts come up with one idea to improve something at home, school, or in their community
    • They sketch their idea or write a short description
  3. Create a Prototype (10–15 minutes)
    • Scouts use available craft materials to build a model of their idea
    • Remind them that prototypes are examples, not finished products
  4. Reflect and Share (7–12 minutes)
    • Scouts present their prototype to others in a minute or less
    • They share what inspired their idea and describe how their prototype works
    • Optional: Scouts can ask peers or the guest speaker for quick suggestions or reactions, and they write down or discuss what they might change or improve next
