Discuss Kindness Messages

Fulfills Step 2 of GSUSA Cadette Netiquette badge requirements.

Materials

Instructions

  1. Explain the purpose of the activity:
  • “Let’s talk about kindness practices. Imagine you got a message saying, ‘Hi! I’ve been thinking of you and just wanted to say I’m lucky to know you.’ How would that make you feel?”
  • “What kinds of messages brighten your day? What’s something you could send to make someone else smile?”
  1. Write down scouts’ ideas for kindness messages (thank you, congratulations, apologies, check-ins, etc.).
  • “We’re going to create a kindness practice together. Decide as a group how often you want to send these messages—for example, once a day, every other day, or checking in with someone after you’ve shared something with them.”
  • “Think about who you want to send your messages to—friends, family, teachers, or teammates.”
  1. Have scouts add these kindness practices to their Netiquette Tip sheets.
  • “For the next two weeks, each of you will follow your kindness practice. Note how people respond, and when everyone is done, we’ll share how it went!”
