- Fulfills Step 5 of GSUSA Cadette Cybersecurity Safeguards badge requirements.
Info Needed for badge requirements: One of the best ways to protect your data is by using strong, unique passwords for every account you have. Additionally, creating an inventory of accounts and the data stored on them can help you act quickly if hacked. For example, if you know a website stores your parent’s credit card information and it gets compromised, you can notify them to cancel the card immediately and prevent further harm.
Items Needed
- Seven posters or large sheets of paper labeled:
- Email, Messages, and Chat
- Social Media and Networking
- Online Banking and Shopping
- Media (Video, Photo, and Music)
- News and Information
- Games
- School-Related
- Set of 10 Markers for each small group of scouts
- Printout for each small group of what PII is represented by each color
- Timer
Instructions
- Set up posters around the room, each representing a category (e.g., Social Media, Shopping, School, Media).
- Divide scouts into pairs or small groups.
- Each group starts at a different poster and USING THE BLACK MARKER – writes the apps they use in that category on the correct poster. For example, write “Instagram” under Social Media or “YouTube” under Media. They get 30 seconds to think of as many apps as they can.
- After 30 seconds are up, switch to the next poster until all groups have hit the 7 posters. If a group goes to a poster that is already filled out, they can add any apps that are not already included.
- Round 2, Scouts use markers to assign dots to each app based on what types of personal data (PII) they store. Example: If “Instagram” stores usernames/passwords (red), scouts would place a red dot next to “Instagram.” They get 15 seconds to assign any PII colors to any apps on the poster.
- After 15 seconds are up, switch to the next poster until all groups have hit the 7 posters. If a group goes to a poster that is already filled out, they can add dots for any possible PII that are not already included.
- Regroup as a troop and vote on which six dots colors are the pieces of data most important to protect. (Hint: There are no right or wrong answers. Scouts might want to use the colors that are for critical information and most often seen on the posters.)
