Decomposition Puzzle

  • Fulfills Step 1 of GSUSA Daisy App Development badge requirements.
  • Fulfills Step 2 of GSUSA Brownie and Junior App Development badge requirements.

Info Needed for Badge Requirements:
Decomposition means breaking a big thing into smaller parts. It’s like taking a toy apart into pieces or splitting a big job into steps. For example, cleaning your room might involve picking up toys first, then making the bed.

You can use decomposition when designing an app too! Instead of building it all at once, break it into parts: What will the app do? What buttons or pictures will it need? Thinking about one small piece at a time helps make the whole app work better.

Items Needed:

  • A simple jigsaw puzzle (you can print one out or store-bought)
  • Optional: scrap paper and pencils to write steps taken

Instructions (Estimated Time: 15–20 minutes):

  1. Solve the Puzzle (7–10 minutes)
    • Scouts work individually, in small groups, or as a troop to complete the jigsaw puzzle. Encourage quiet focus but allow teamwork and collaboration.
  2. Discuss the Process (5–7 minutes)
    • Ask scouts to reflect:
      • What did you do first?
      • Did you find the corners or sort colors?
      • What helped you figure out where each piece went?
    • Write down the steps they list as a group.
  3. Connect to Decomposition (3 minutes)
    • Point out how they took on one small step at a time instead of solving the whole puzzle at once. Explain that app creators do the same thing. They plan one step or part at a time, just like solving a puzzle!
