Cyber Hygiene Campaign – GSUSA Handout

Fulfills Step 5 of GSUSA Ambassador Cybersecurity Safeguards badge requirements.

Info Needed for the badge requirements: Social marketing focuses on inspiring positive changes in behavior for the good of society, rather than selling products. It uses creative strategies to promote healthy habits and actions, like wearing seatbelts, quitting smoking, or using reusable bags. A campaign encourages others to adopt good cyber habits, using similar techniques to influence behavior in a positive way.

Items Needed

  • VTK Make Cyber Hygiene Go Viral by GSUSA for each group of 3-4 scouts.
  • Large sheet of paper for each group.
  • Markers or colored pencils to share.
  • Pen or pencil for each scout.
  • (Optional) Digital devices for creating photos or videos as part of the campaign.

Instructions

  1. Divide scouts into groups of 3-4.
  2. Each group selects one cyber hygiene practice from Step Four, such as:
    • Changing passwords regularly.
    • Avoiding clicking on suspicious links.
    • Not accepting friend requests from strangers.
    • Updating software and installing antivirus software.
    • Avoiding public Wi-Fi connections.
    • Backing up data regularly.
  3. Provide each group with the Make Cyber Hygiene Go Viral handout to brainstorm ideas and plan their campaign. Groups design a product, ad, or other creative material to promote their selected cyber hygiene habit.
  4. (Optional) If scouts have digital devices, they can take photos or create videos as part of their campaign.
  5. Bring the troop back together for each group to present their social marketing campaign to the troop. Groups explain their strategy and how their campaign encourages healthy cyber habits.
