Court of Awards – Tree of Knowledge

Preparation:

Prepare a tree with branches, either drawn on paper or crafted as a physical model. Cut out construction paper leaves and write an activity on each leaf that the scouts completed to earn their awards. Arrange seating for families and set up materials for the ceremony.

Items Needed:

  • Tree with branches (paper or physical model)
  • Construction paper leaves with activities written on them
    • All Troops will need to individually create their own list of activities. A leaf can be done for each meeting or event the troop did during the year – or add even more leaves if needed by writing down individual activities done for each badge earned as a troop. The number of leaves and which activities to list are completely up to the leaders.
  • Tape or ties to attach leaves to the tree
  • Awards earned by the scouts

Ceremony Instructions:

  1. Begin the ceremony with a flag presentation. Conduct an opening flag ceremony with the scouts serving as the Color Guard.
  2. Sing an appropriate Girl Scout song together to set the tone for the event.
  3. The leader introduces the Tree of Knowledge:
“This is the Tree of Knowledge. The tree trunk represents Girl Scouting. Each branch represents a part of the journey we have taken in our troop. Each leaf represents the knowledge and skill we acquired as we branched out to explore our world.”
  4. Each scout steps forward one at a time, reads the activity written on their leaf aloud, and attaches the leaf to the tree.
  5. After all the leaves have been added to the tree, the leader presents the awards to the scouts. As each scout’s name is called, they step forward to receive their badges, certificates, or other recognitions.
  6. Close the ceremony with a Scout Ring by gathering the scouts in a circle. Then form a Friendship Circle with all attendees and sing “Taps” together.
