Preparation:
Create a poster board with the letters “G-I-R-L S-C-O-U-T-I-N-G,” each letter large enough to be visible during the ceremony. Attach each letter to a separate card if needed for individual speakers to hold. Arrange seating for families, set up a display area for badges and awards, and assign each part of the poem to a different scout to read.
Items Needed:
- Poster board or cards with the letters G-I-R-L S-C-O-U-T-I-N-G
- Awards and badges earned by scouts
- A printed or memorized copy of the poem for each speaker
Ceremony Instructions:
- Opening:
Begin with a flag presentation and a Girl Scout song chosen by the troop. The leader welcomes attendees and explains the significance of the Court of Awards ceremony, celebrating achievements and embodying the ideals of Girl Scouting. - Introduction to the Poem:
The leader introduces the poem by explaining that each letter in “G-I-R-L S-C-O-U-T-I-N-G” represents an important value or characteristic of Girl Scouting. Scouts will take turns presenting the letters and reading their verses. - Recitation of the Poem:
Each scout steps forward one by one, holding their letter and reciting their part of the poem:- Speaker #1: “G is for the Gracious way we all proclaim our birth.”
- Speaker #2: “I points up the ideas shared and those we’d like unearthed.”
- Speaker #3: “R is for the respect we have for every race and creed.”
- Speaker #4: “L is for our loyalty to promises we heed.”
- Speaker #5: “S is for sincerity of deed, word and mind.”
- Speaker #6: “C is for the countless ways in which these are combined.”
- Speaker #7: “O is obligation that we owe to fellow man.”
- Speaker #8: “U means that it’s you who must be first to lend a hand.”
- Speaker #9: “T is for the teamwork which has evidenced our growth.”
- Speaker #10: “I is for integrity which backs the Girl Scout oath.”
- Speaker #11: “N is for the noble way we remember days of old.”
- Speaker #12: “G is for the grateful thanks for efforts toward our goal.”
- Reflection and Closing of the Poem:
Two additional scouts deliver the closing lines:- Speaker #13: “Each of these is Girl Scouting. What work! What fun! What pride! To recall with admiration and seek with greater stride.”
- Speaker #14: “Receiving all these badges for all that we have done shows the pride we carry. What pride! What work! What fun!”
- Presentation of Awards:
After the recitation, the leader calls scouts forward individually or in groups to receive their awards and badges. The leader briefly describes the accomplishments behind the awards to celebrate each scout’s efforts. - Closing Ceremony:
Form a Friendship Circle with all attendees and sing a troop-chosen Girl Scout song to conclude the event. Thank families and participants for their support, and celebrate the scouts’ achievements.
