Conservation – Water

A list of simple water conservation activities tailored for elementary-aged scouts.

  • Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth to save water and reduce waste.
  • Turn off the water while soaping your hands to reduce water waste.
  • Challenge your family to take shorter showers by setting a timer. Try to beat your time next week!
  • Use a bucket to collect water while waiting for it to heat up, then use it to water plants.
  • Help your family check for dripping faucets or leaks and remind an adult to fix them.
  • Use a watering can instead of a hose to water plants and flowers.
  • Collect rainwater in a barrel or bucket with the help of an adult, and use it to water outdoor plants.
  • Create colorful reminder signs to put near faucets at home to encourage everyone to use less water.
  • Wash fruits and vegetables in a bowl of water instead of running the tap. Use the leftover water for plants.
  • Turn off sprinklers when it’s raining or after enough water has been given to the grass.
  • Use a broom instead of a hose to clean sidewalks or driveways.
  • Learn about native plants that need less water and encourage your family to grow them in the yard.
  • Take part in a community clean-up to protect rivers, streams, and lakes from pollution.
  • Design a poster or presentation about the importance of saving water and share it with friends or classmates.
  • Play “Water Detective” at home by keeping track of how your family saves water each day.

These activities are hands-on and teach kids the value of water conservation in fun and meaningful ways.
