A list of simple activities about solar power tailored for elementary-aged scouts.

- Build and use a solar oven to make snacks like s’mores or nachos.
- Hang laundry on a clothesline instead of using the dryer and talk about how it saves energy.
- Find a solar-powered item, like a flashlight or phone charger, and test its effectiveness. Discuss if it’s helpful and why.
- Work with your family to research solar panel costs and how they can save energy over time.
- Create a poster showing the dangers of sun damage and share tips on how to stay safe in the sun with friends and family.
- Explore why the sun is important for Earth and make a fun drawing or model showing how it supports life, like helping plants grow.
- Use a magnifying glass to harness the sun’s energy and safely experiment with how it can focus light (with an adult supervising).
- Go on a “solar scavenger hunt” to find things in your neighborhood that use solar power, like lights or chargers.
- Make a chart of how long certain activities take with and without solar power—like heating water—and compare the results.
- Design your own solar-powered invention using craft materials and explain how it would work.
- Learn how solar panels convert sunlight into energy by creating a simple science experiment with mirrors or reflective surfaces.
- Take photos or draw pictures of objects powered by the sun, like gardens growing, solar lights, or playground equipment warmed by sunlight.
- Host a “Solar Fun Day” with your scout group to share facts about the sun, make solar crafts, and play sunny-themed games.
- Talk to your family about turning off lights during the day and letting sunlight light your home instead.
These activities are interactive, fun, and help scouts learn about the importance and power of the sun while engaging in practical solar-powered tasks.
