Conservation – Power

A list of simple power conservation activities tailored for elementary-aged scouts.

  • Find out how much electricity your home uses in a month by reading the utility bill. Challenge your family to use less power next month and track your progress!
  • Make signs for light switches to remind everyone to turn off lights when leaving a room.
  • Unplug unused appliances, like chargers or small kitchen gadgets, before going to bed.
  • Use cold water when doing laundry to save energy.
  • Help your family replace regular lightbulbs with energy-saving LED bulbs.
  • Research what “smart power strips” are and how they save energy. Ask an adult to help install one in your home.
  • Create a poster, video, or presentation about why conserving energy is important for the environment. Share it with your scout group or classmates.
  • Keep windows and curtains closed during hot sunny days to help keep rooms cool without using extra air conditioning.
  • Open the blinds or curtains during the day for natural sunlight instead of turning on lights.
  • Turn off fans when you leave a room—they cool people, not spaces!
  • Ask an adult to help you adjust the thermostat by a few degrees (warmer in summer, cooler in winter) to save energy.
  • Plan a “no electricity” evening with your family. Use flashlights, play games, or tell stories instead of watching TV or using electronics.
  • Learn about renewable energy sources, like solar and wind power, and share what you find with friends.
  • Organize a fun “power patrol” at home to check for devices left on or lights that could be turned off.

These activities are both practical and educational, empowering young scouts to make a difference while having fun!
