Fulfills Step 3 of GSUSA Cadette Netiquette badge requirements.
Items needed
- Pens or pencils
- Paper (enough for at least one per scout)
- Wi-Fi or cable-connected devices (laptops, tablets, or phones) for research
- Netiquette Tip Sheet (from earlier activity)
Instructions
- Scouts pair off or form small groups, ensuring at least one internet-connected device per group.
- Scouts discuss where they often read comments (e.g., social media, blogs, news articles) and describe the kinds of comments they see.
- Scouts identify what makes a comment useful (e.g., encourages discussion, shares ideas) versus what makes it negative or unhelpful (e.g., insults, lack of substance).
- Scouts take out devices and search for five examples of useful comments and five examples of negative comments. Suggested sources include social media, news articles, and blogs.
- Once scouts have their examples, they share some of the comments with the group.
- Scouts identify common traits of useful comments and negative comments based on their findings.
- Each scout updates their Netiquette Tip sheet by writing:
- One tip for writing useful comments
- One tip for avoiding negative or unhelpful comments
