Camp Research

Fulfills Step 1 of GSUSA Cabin Camper badge requirements.

Items Needed:

  • Computer or tablet with internet access
  • Projector or large screen for group viewing
  • Website or page for the chosen camping area
  • (Optional) Leave No Trace handout (one per scout)
  • (Optional) Paper and pencil for scouts who want to take notes or draw what they learn

Instructions (Total Time: 30 minutes):

  1. Look Up the Camping Area (10–12 minutes)
    • Scouts take turns helping with online research
    • The troop explores the camping site’s website together on the big screen
    • Search for answers to questions like:
      • Is there running water or bathrooms?
      • Can we cook inside or outside?
      • What are the sleeping arrangements?
      • What are the rules or costs?
  2. Share What You Found (10–12 minutes)
    • Scouts talk about new things they learned from the website
    • (Optional) Draw something they saw or describe something they’re excited about
  3. Learn About Leave No Trace (5–6 minutes)
    • Scouts read or talk through the Leave No Trace basics
    • They learn how to care for nature and be respectful guests at the campsite
