Camp Choice Planning

Fulfills Step 1 of GSUSA Cabin Camper badge requirements.

Items Needed:

  • Large sheet of paper or chart paper
  • Tape to hang the paper
  • Marker or pen for writing
  • Optional: pictures of campsites or camping scenes for inspiration

Instructions (Total Time: 15 minutes):

  1. Set Up the Brainstorm Chart (3–4 minutes)
    • Tape the chart paper to a wall and draw a line down the middle
    • Label one side “Must Have!” and the other “Would Be Nice”
  2. Brainstorm as a Troop (5–6 minutes)
    • Scouts suggest things they’d want at a campsite
    • Examples: indoor bathroom, nearby lake, electricity, shaded area, hiking trail
    • Leader writes each item in the correct column (need vs. want)
  3. Vote on Top Priorities (4–5 minutes)
    • For each item, scouts vote using a thumbs up (yes), sideways (maybe), or down (no)
    • Use the votes to find the most important campsite features
  4. Use Input for Camp Planning
    • Leader notes the top choices to help select or suggest a site
    • If all features aren’t possible for the first trip, save ideas for future adventures
