Budget a Day Outside

Items Needed:

  • Paper
  • Pencil or crayon
  • “Outdoor Fun Price List” – printed or written on a board (See Below)

Instructions (Estimated Time: 20 minutes):

  1. Set the Scene (3 minutes)
    • Scouts imagine planning a fun day outside with a group of 12 total scouts. They have $30 pretend dollars to spend. The goal is to plan a great outdoor day without going over budget.
  2. Choose Activities (2–3 minutes)
    • Scouts pick one main activity like:
      • Picnic
      • Backyard obstacle course
      • Planting flowers
      • Flying kites
      • Nature scavenger hunt
  3. Use the Pretend Price List (5–7 minutes)
    • Scouts look at a simple price list and choose items their activity needs.
    • They write or draw each item and its cost. Then they add up their total.
  4. Check Their Budget (2 minutes)
    • If their total is $30 or less, great!
    • If they go over, they decide what to remove or swap.
  5. Reflect or Share (5 minutes)
    • Scouts can turn and share with a buddy or draw a picture of their outdoor fun.
    • Ask: What was the most expensive item? Did they have to make a choice?
