Bridging – Traditional Brownie Fly-Up

This is for a ceremony only. It does not meet the Rainbow Bridging badge requirements. Troops should earn their Rainbow Bridging badge at a troop meeting prior to this ceremony, where they are awarded their Rainbow Bridge badge.

Preparation:

  • Brownie Formation: Brownie Girl Scouts and their leaders stand in a circle on one side of the room.
  • Junior Formation: Junior Girl Scouts and their leaders form a horseshoe on the opposite side, with the open end facing the Brownies.
  • Transition Space: The area between the formations symbolizes the bridging transition.

Items Needed:

  • Wings for Fly-Up Brownies (optional: attached to ribbons with additional recognitions)
  • Badges earned during the year, membership stars with green discs, and Bridge to Junior Girl Scout patches (if earned)
  • Girl Scout Pins
  • Song lyrics or music for sing-alongs
  • Prepared ceremony script
  • Symbolic bridge or other transition element

Instructions:

  1. Welcome and Sharing Memories:
The Brownie Leader addresses the group:
“In the Brownie ring, we have shared many good times together—learning new songs and games, going on hikes, and working on badges. I’d like for our bridging girls to share what they’ve enjoyed most about being a Brownie Girl Scout.”
Fly-Up Brownies step into the center of the ring and share their favorite experiences.
  2. Farewell Song:
    The Brownie Leader says:
“Since this is our last time together as Brownie Girl Scouts, let’s sing our ‘Brownie Smile Song’ one more time.”
All Brownie Girl Scouts sing the song together.
  3. Presentation of Wings and Recognitions:
    The Brownie Leader recites:
    “Brownies, you are just about
    To become Junior Girl Scouts.
In the troop, you soon will find
Junior Girl Scouts are true and kind.
So now I give you Brownie wings
That you may fly to bigger things.”

Wings, along with earned badges and recognitions, are presented to each Fly-Up.
  4. Breaking the Ring and Crossing Over:
    The Brownie Leader says:
“Now it’s time to say goodbye,
Break the ring, and out you fly.”

The ring opens briefly for Fly-Ups and the leader to step out and cross the symbolic bridge or transition space. Each Fly-Up is met by a Junior Girl Scout, who escorts her to the horseshoe formation.
  5. Welcome to Juniors:
The Junior Leader welcomes the Fly-Ups:
“You have now entered a new level in the wide world of Girl Scouting. Please join me in repeating the Girl Scout Promise as we celebrate your transition.”
The Fly-Up Brownies and Junior Girl Scouts recite the Girl Scout Promise together.
  6. Pinning Ceremony and Poem:
As Fly-Ups are pinned by Junior Girl Scouts, the following poem is read:
    My Scout Pin
My Scout pin is a little thing,
That is to say, in size.
But it holds a wealth of many things,
    Tucked within its sides.
To me, it means honor, trustworthy and true.
For my neighbor, there’s nothing I wouldn’t do.
It means I am a friend to all that I know,
Courteous and cheerful wherever I go.
To be useful and help others is what I like to do.
Being kind to animals should be included, too.
“Do a good turn daily” is my aim.
Our law and God’s are almost the same.
That is what my Scout pin means to me.
If everyone would follow the Girl Scout way,
    Wouldn’t we have a wonderful U.S.A.?
  7. Closing Remarks and Celebration:
When all Fly-Ups are pinned, the Junior Leader says:
“This pin tells everyone you are a Girl Scout. Wear it with pride. And now, welcome to Junior Girl Scouts!”
    (Applause and cheers.)
  8. Concluding Song:
End the ceremony with a group sing-along of “When E’re You Make A Promise” or “Make New Friends.”
