This is for a ceremony only. It does not meet the Rainbow Bridging badge requirements. Troops should earn their Rainbow Bridging badge at a troop meeting prior to this ceremony, where they are awarded their Rainbow Bridge badge.
Poem used is by Carol Lee Spages from Bridging Ceremonies by GSEM
Preparation:
Set up a symbolic bridge or pathway for crossing. Arrange for Cadette scouts or leaders to welcome Juniors on the other side. Prepare Cadette pins or bridging certificates to present during the ceremony.
Items Needed:
- Bridge or pathway for crossing
- Cadette pins, bridging certificates, or other recognitions
- The printed or memorized poem
Ceremony Instructions:
- Opening:
Begin with a flag ceremony and a Girl Scout song chosen by the troop to celebrate this transition. The leader welcomes everyone and explains the significance of the ceremony:
“Today, we celebrate the achievements of our Junior Girl Scouts and their transition into the next exciting phase of their scouting journey as Cadettes. This bridge represents the steps they’ve taken to grow and learn.” - Recitation of the Poem – Introduction:
Before the scouts cross, the leader recites the first part of the poem:
“Girls, dedicate the coming years with all it brings to see,
Not asking for a path of ease
But one of victory.
The bridge into Cadette Girl Scouting is long, and its span reaches high,
But the handshake of welcome awaits you
With opportunity as high as the sky!” - Crossing the Bridge:
Juniors step forward one by one to cross the bridge. At the top of the bridge, the leader pauses them briefly and says:
“As you cross this bridge, may you carry the lessons and accomplishments from your Junior years into this next chapter of your Girl Scout journey.”
Scouts complete the crossing and are greeted on the other side by Cadette scouts or leaders with a handshake or warm welcome. - Welcoming as Cadettes – Poem Continuation:
After all Juniors have crossed, the leader recites the final part of the poem:
“You’ve crossed one bridge and you’re on your way.
Cadette Girl Scouts have a challenge that’s true
With laws to live by and Promise to say
There’s work in this world to do.
So eagerly take up each challenge
And to meet many needs, prepare
In your home, in your town, in your country
Your skills and your vision do share.
Please join with me in repeating the Girl Scout Promise.” - Presentation of Recognitions:
The leader or Cadette representatives present Cadette pins, bridging certificates, or other recognitions to the new Cadettes, congratulating them on their achievements and welcoming them into their new role. - Closing:
Form a Friendship Circle with all attendees and sing a chosen Girl Scout song to celebrate the unity and excitement for new adventures. The leader offers final words of encouragement:
“As Cadettes, you have opportunities to take on bigger challenges, learn new skills, and make a meaningful impact in your community. We are so proud of you!”
