WARNING – From a former GSUSA council staff: This ceremony was retired for cause. Please be respectful of our Jewish families. Even if you do not have any Jewish members in your troop, everyone has friends, family and colleagues, and we should strive to not hurt them.
Check out the Bridging – Brownie Uniform Magic Oven Recipe Ceremony as an alternative. Read about why this ceremony is an issue here.
This is for a ceremony only. It does not meet the Rainbow Bridging badge requirements. Troops should earn their Rainbow Bridging badge at a troop meeting prior to this ceremony, where they are awarded their Rainbow Bridge badge
Items Needed:
- Large cardboard “oven” (decorated appliance box with a crawl-through door)
- Mixing bowls, wooden spoons, measuring cups, flour sifter
- Optional props: chef hats, aprons, timer with bell, cookbook or handbook
- Pan or baking tray (to symbolize putting the brownies “in the oven”)
- Brownie vests, sashes, pins, and certificates for each bridging Daisy
- Symbolic bridge or pathway (optional for afterward)
Before the Ceremony:
- Prepare and decorate the oven; place it near a corner or space so girls can hide behind it.
- Assign each Brownie a role in the recipe script (stirring, pouring, reading, etc.).
- Make sure each Daisy’s Brownie uniform is ready behind the oven.
- Place the timer with bell near the “oven” for sound effect.
- Rehearse the script to ensure everyone knows their part and transitions.
Formation:
- First and second-year Brownies form a semi-circle around a table with the recipe ingredients
- Daisy Girl Scouts are hidden behind the oven, ready to “bake”
- Co-leader or helper is stationed on both sides of the oven for costume transitions
Instructions:
- Leader (to Brownies): “We sure could use some new brownies to fill the empty spaces in our Brownie Ring.”
- Scout 1: “Yes, what can we do about it?”
- Scout 2: “I know! Let’s make some new brownies!”
- Leader: “Girls, look in your handbook for the recipe.”
- Scout 3: (pretending to read from book) “Here it is!”
- Leader: “To make Brownies, we need to mix six basic ingredients: the Girl Scout Promise, the Girl Scout Law, and the four program goals.”
- Brownie with the large mixing bowl begins stirring. Other scouts take turns adding imaginary “ingredients” while reciting their lines.
- Scout 4: “1 cup of Promise to serve God and my country.” (pours)
- Scout 5: “Add two cups of honesty.” (pours)
- Scout 6: “And four tablespoons of cheerfulness.” (stirs)
- Scout 7: “Stir in one cup of thoughtfulness. Beat together ½ cup fairness and ½ cup helpfulness, and add to the bowl.”
- Scout 8: “Sprinkle in 2 tablespoons of sisterhood of scouting.”
- Scout 9: “Add one cup respect for authority, and one cup respect for myself and others.”
- Scout 10: “Sift together ½ cup of wise use of resources and 6 tablespoons of a promise to protect and improve the world.”
- Scout 11: “Blend in ½ cup of each program goal: develop individual potential, relate to others, develop values, and contribute to society.”
- Scout 12: (puts invisible batter in tray) “In a prepared pan, spread the batter evenly. Bake at a moderate temperature until done.”
- Scout sets the tray inside the oven. Another rings the bell.
- Leader: “They’re done! Let’s see how they turned out.”
- (Open the oven door. Daisy Girl Scouts crawl out one by one now wearing their Brownie vests or sashes.)
- Leader (or another Brownie): “Look! A fresh new batch of Brownies!”
- Closing:
- Form a Brownie Ring with new and current Brownies
- Recite the Girl Scout Promise together
- Present Brownie pins and bridging certificates
- Optional: end with a song such as “Make New Friends” or “Brownie Smile Song”
