Authentic Style Vision Board

Fulfills Step 2 of GSUSA Outside the Mirror badge requirements.

Info Needed: Scouts should understand that being authentic means showing their real selves and celebrating what makes them unique. Scouts will explore what it means to be authentic by choosing styles that reflect who they are, how they feel, or how they want to express themselves.

Items Needed:

  • Posterboard or paper (one per scout).
  • Catalogs, magazines, printed images, or reused paper scraps.
  • Scissors.
  • Glue or glue sticks.
  • (Optional) Tablets or phones with collage apps, if scouts are making theirs digitally.
  • (Optional) Markers or stickers for added personalization.

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 20–25 min):

  1. Intro and distribution of supplies (3–5 min).
    • Scouts each get a piece of posterboard or paper and access to cuttable materials.
    • (Optional) Offer digital tools if scouts prefer to build a virtual board.
  2. Build a vision board that shows authentic style (10–12 min).
    • Scouts cut and glue images of looks, colors, textures, or expressions that feel like “them.”
    • Encourage them to focus on how a look feels rather than whether it’s trendy.
    • (Optional) Scouts can write words or phrases that describe their authentic style.
  3. Optional sharing and reflection (5–8 min).
    • Scouts may choose to share their board with a buddy or group.
    • Prompt gentle reflection: “What does this board say about you?” or “How does this style show your real self?”
    • Remind scouts that staying true to themselves includes how they dress, move, or feel comfortable and there’s no one right way.
