Fulfills Step 1 of GSUSA Daisy, Brownie, and Junior App Development badge requirements.
Info Needed for Badge Requirements:
An app is a special program that runs on phones and tablets. Some apps are games, while others help you learn new things, stay organized, or explore new skills. People use apps for fun, learning, and everyday tasks.
Items Needed:
- Printed and pre-cut app icon cards (choose from the resources below):
- App Icons compiled by The Badge Archive
- Free App Task Cards on Teachers Pay Teachers by Classroom Creations By Kristy
- Free Microsoft Office Matching Printable Game on Teachers Pay Teachers by Cognitive Glow
- Free App Cards Sampler on Teachers Pay Teachers by CIborg Tech
- Screenshots from the Google Play Store App List (optional for additional variety)
- Sorting header cards labeled:
- Daisies: “Helpful” and “Entertainment”
- Brownies & Juniors: “Helpful,” “Learning,” and “Entertainment”
Instructions (Estimated Time: 15 minutes):
- What Are Apps? (3 minutes)
- Discuss what apps are and how different people use them every day. Give simple examples: games, educational tools, or apps grown-ups use for organizing and scheduling.
- App Sorting Activity (7–10 minutes)
- Lay out the app icon cards. Scouts work solo, in pairs, or as a group to sort each app into the labeled categories. Encourage scouts to share why they think each app belongs in a certain category.
- Wrap-Up Discussion (3 minutes)
- Talk about any apps that were tricky to place. Could some fit in more than one group? Explain how people who design apps think about what users need—whether it’s learning, helping, or just having fun.
