Animal Sounds In Different Languages

Activity Description: Scouts listen to animal sounds in different languages and match animals to their habitats.

Info Needed: Animal are all unique. They have different bodies and features that help them live where they are. There is thick fur for colder environments, or fins and gills for underwater creatures. They make unique sounds, and each leave a unique print where they move, called an animal track.


Items Needed:

Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 15–25 min):

  1. Introduce the idea of animal sounds in different languages (3–5 min)
    • Scouts learn that animals make the same sounds everywhere, but people write those sounds differently in different languages. (See Duolingo’s Explanation)
    • Example: a pig says “Oink” in English and “Chrum” in Polish.
  2. Watch and listen to the video (5–10 min)
    • Play the Animals In Different Languages video.
    • Scouts listen to how different cultures describe animal sounds.
  3. Match animals to habitats (5–7 min)
    • Scouts use the VTK Animal Habitats printout to match each animal to where it lives.
    • They can use clues from the video and worksheet.
  4. (Optional) Draw or act out animal sounds (2–3 min)
    • Scouts draw their favorite animal and write or act out the sound it makes in a different language.
