Animal Sort Relay Race

Fulfills Step 4 of Scouting America Cub Scout Lion Mountain Lion adventure requirements.

Items Needed:

  • At least one sheet printed of the Animal Cards to have a minimum of 8 wild and 8 domesticated animals. Cut and have them ready for the activity.

Instructions With Scoring:

  • Set up the area to have a starting line on one side of the room and a line of cards (face up) on the other side.
  • Split the scouts into two teams and line them up at the starting line. The first two scouts in the line on each team are the first Runners.
  • Leader calls out “wild” or “domesticated”. The Runners race to the other side of the room to pick a card for an animal that is wild or domesticated as the leader called. They return to their line and tag the next scout in line on their team. Leader verifies they got the correct card or they must race back to try again. The first team that returns with the right card and tags the next Runner gets a point for that round.
  • Continue playing rounds until all scouts have gone at least once, or until all cards are taken. Count the points earned for each team to decide the winner.

Instructions Without Scoring:

  • Set up the area to have a starting line on one side of the room and a line of cards (face up) on the other side.
  • Line the scouts up at the starting line. The first scout in the line is the first Runner.
  • Leader calls out “wild” or “domesticated”. The Runner races to the other side of the room to pick a card for an animal that is wild or domesticated as the leader called. They return to their line and tag the next scout in line. Leader verifies they got the correct card. If they did, they sit down to watch. If they returned with the wrong card, they go to the end of the line to race again later.
  • Continue playing rounds until all scouts have gone and are sitting on the side.
