Fulfills Step 2 of GSUSA Cadette Netiquette badge requirements.
Items Needed:
- Pens or pencils
- Ruled or plain paper (one per scout)
- Netiquette Tip Sheet from the previous activity
- Phones, tablets, or laptops with a messaging application scouts use regularly
Instructions:
- Ask scouts:
- “What are your favorite messaging apps?”
- “How many of you have sent a message in the past two months that you wish you hadn’t?”
- “What makes you wish you hadn’t sent it?”
- Have scouts examine the last 15 messages they sent in their favorite messaging app or texts (if their app deletes messages).
- On their paper, scouts should write numbers 1 through 15.
- For each message, ask them to consider:
- “Would it bother you if the person forwarded your message?” or “Would you say the message to the person’s face?”
- If the answer is “no” to either question, draw a frowny face next to the number.
- If the answer is “yes” to both, draw a smiley face next to the number.
- Once all 15 messages are reviewed, discuss what scouts found. Ask:
- “If you didn’t like some messages, what would you have done differently?”
- Encourage scouts to add new tips to their Netiquette Tip sheet based on their review.
