Across Generations: GSUSA – Marilyn S.

A Life Shaped by Girl Scouting

Brownie, 1953 • Mariner Scout • Troop Leader & Advancement Chair • Scout Camp Volunteer

“My Girl Scout claim to fame is I and another girl as Brownies presented Mrs Elanor Roosevelt with a box of Thin Mint GS cookies. She we visiting St Paul, MN to give a speech and we were chosen to present the GS council.”

Marilyn’s Girl Scout journey began in 1953 as a Brownie in Troop 8, part of the Pansy Patrol. Her mother served as troop leader through 8th grade, guiding the girls through years of friendship and growth. When her troop disbanded, Marilyn joined a Mariner troop and continued through high school. She was drawn to the adventure and independence of the program.

Her most iconic memory? As a Brownie, Marilyn and another scout were selected to present a box of Thin Mints to Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt during a visit to St. Paul, Minnesota. It was a moment of pride and awe that still stands out decades later.

A Family of Scouts

Though Marilyn didn’t continue in Girl Scouts after high school, her commitment to scouting never faded. She raised two sons who both earned the rank of Eagle Scout, and she became deeply involved in their troop, serving as advancement chair at the troop, district, and council levels. Her leadership helped shape the next generation of scouts, both boys and girls.

Campfires That Still Burn

Marilyn continues to volunteer at the Girl Scout camp she attended as a teen, returning each spring and fall for cleanup weekends. The camp hosts reunions every five years, welcoming former campers, CITs, and staff. Before the 2020 pandemic, these gatherings drew nearly 100 women back to the woods they once called home.

Her dedication to preserving scouting memories and fostering community remains strong.
