Activity Description: Scouts practice drawing different facial expressions to show emotion in their comic characters.
- Fulfills Step 3 of GSUSA Cadette Comic Artist badge requirements.
Info Needed: Build drawing skills by practicing character shapes, poses, and expressions through tracing, freehand sketching, or guided tutorials.
Items Needed:
- 25 Expression Challenge sheet for each scout or small group of scouts
- Writing and coloring utensils
- (Optional) Mirrors
Instructions (Estimated Total Time: 15 min):
- Choose one character to use for this activity. (3 min)
- Scouts can use a human, animal, emojis, or imaginary character.
- Use the 25 Expression Challenge sheet to sketch different emotions. (10 min)
- This can be an individual scout challenge, or divide into small groups of 2–3 scouts.
- Scouts draw their character showing a variety of expressions with a time limit of 10 minutes. How many can they complete before time is up?
- (Optional) Scouts can use a mirror to study how their own face changes with emotion.
- Look over the expressions and notice how features change. (2 min)
- Scouts observe how eyebrows, eyes, and mouths help show how someone feels.
- (Optional) Scouts can share a favorite expression with the group.
