Selecting badges is an exciting part of scouting, but the voting process should evolve as scouts grow and develop decision-making skills. And there are so many ways to vote! The method you choose should fit your troop.

Here’s how troops can structure badge selection at different levels to encourage engagement and thoughtful choices.
Daisy: Small-Scale Voting Throughout the Year
At the Daisy level, scouts are just beginning to explore badges, so voting should be simple and flexible.
Simple Three Choice Vote – Youth vote by choosing between three options and deciding as a group which to do first.
Brownie: Yearly Badge Selection in the Fall
Brownies are ready for longer-term planning, so they can vote on a full year of badges at once in the fall. Looking at the full list of badges can be overwhelming. Leaders can pick a list to vote on, or make a small list for them to narrow down choices before making a vote.
Year Plan Voting – Youth vote on their favorite options from a large list to decide group activities for the year.
Junior: Expanded Choices & Group-Based Final Voting
Junior scouts can brainstorm their own list without needed a leader to create it before the meeting. This method ensures scouts get a voice in the process while keeping choices thoughtful and realistic.
- Use the short summaries of each badge provided on The Badge Archive badge list, or use printed badge booklets for scouts to flip through and mark favorites.
- Each scout selects three badges they’re interested in to create a large list to use for Year Plan Voting.
Ways Scouts Can Vote on Badges
Each troop will find its own way to vote, but try out some of the many different ways to vote.
By adapting voting methods to different levels, troops can keep the process engaging, thoughtful, and age-appropriate, ensuring scouts enjoy the badges they choose while staying involved in the planning.
