From GSSJC Troop 114033
Gaming, whether tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons, video games, or arcade experiences, is a huge part of many peoples lives. But not everyone has equal access to play due to disabilities, financial barriers, or lack of inclusive gaming spaces.

Advocating for Accessible Gaming for All means removing barriers and ensuring everyone can experience the joy of gaming, regardless of physical, financial, or social challenges.
Challenges Faced by Gamers Who Need More Accessibility
Despite gaming’s popularity, not every player can fully participate due to limitations in game design or physical environments.
Gaming Accessibility for Disabled Players – Some players have motor disabilities, visual impairments, or sensory sensitivities, making it difficult to use standard controllers or dice. Adaptive gaming tools, such as braille dice, larger print character sheets, and specialized controllers, can help bridge the gap.
Financial Barriers – RPG books, arcade credits, gaming consoles, and accessories can be expensive, preventing many gamers from playing due to cost alone. Some organizations work on making games more affordable and accessible, but many communities still lack inclusive pricing or public gaming spaces.
Inclusive Spaces – Some gaming environments aren’t welcoming for all players. Gatekeeping, exclusionary behavior, or lack of beginner-friendly game nights can discourage new or diverse players from participating. Advocating for safe, inclusive gaming events ensures that everyone can enjoy tabletop and video games without feeling left out.
Ways Scouts Can Take Action
Scouts passionate about accessible gaming can take meaningful steps to help create inclusive experiences for all players.
- 🎲 Upcycle Old Clothing into Dice & Patch Bags – Scouts could repurpose old fabric (like torn clothes) into custom bags for D&D dice and fun patches!
- 🛠 Raise Funds for Accessible Gaming Gear – Host fundraisers to provide braille dice, large-print character sheets, or adaptive controllers to local libraries or game stores.
- 🏰 Host an “All-Inclusive Game Night” – Organize a community RPG or arcade event where accessibility is prioritized, ensuring players of all skill levels and abilities feel welcome.
- 📖 Create Gaming Accessibility Guides – Scouts could design easy-read game instructions or sensory-friendly play tips for neurodivergent or disabled gamers.
- 🎮 Advocate for Inclusive Arcade Pricing – Work with local arcades to provide affordable gameplay options or designated quiet hours for sensory-sensitive players.
- 🌍 Support Organizations That Make Gaming Inclusive – Research and connect with nonprofits working on accessible gaming initiatives, helping them spread awareness and resources.
Advocate! How to Spread Awareness
- Create a Presentation or Skit – Show why gaming accessibility matters and how scouts can help.
- Launch a Campaign – Make posters with eye-opening facts about gaming accessibility and promote solutions.
- Host a Community Workshop – Teach fellow scouts and community members how to make gaming spaces more inclusive.
- Write an Article or Blog Post – Share this topic in school newspapers or online communities to educate more players.
