2024 Novelist NaNoWriMo – Day 7

November 7th

It’s time for page one, but you know what is the toughest part?

The first sentence.

It doesn’t matter if you chose to start at the beginning of your story or a scene in the middle – getting started is hard. And many authors agonize over that first sentence. It’s the hook to bring readers in for the rest of the story, right?

Don’t think about that. Don’t worry if it’s catchy enough, exciting enough, or a perfect fit. Just write. You’ll be able to go back and change it – but the key to getting through this challenge is just put things down on paper (or the computer file). Let your thoughts go and just get it out.

If you’re non-fiction, you also have to just get a start. Remember the goals you set out!

Write in a notebook or in a document file – but fill up that first page.

Finish!

Page 1 complete.

Go on to Day 8 (We’re into the writing, one page a day – stay strong! )

Want an Example?

We’re not sharing our whole 1st page – but we had a hard time deciding on which start was better. We finally settled on:
“Dragon guts!” Ava grumbled as Clara hummed at the stovetop. Clara’s cooking experiments were legend, both for the great outcomes and the horrible ones. You never knew which you were going to get.
Yeah – we got a 2nd character – Ava is Clara’s best friend and while a bit of a dreamer, she’s got a quick temper.

(Go back to Day 6?)
