2024 Novelist NaNoWriMo – Day 6

November 6th

Use the a goal sheet!

This has your daily goal for the whole month to be able to look ahead and check off as you accomplish them.

At the bottom is a section to write your own goals. Make mini-goals to help you get to the 20 page goal.

Ask your self three questions:

  • What do you want to achieve?
In these 20 pages, do you want to write a few scenes or work on a section of the book?
  • Where do you want to start writing?
Not everyone will start at the beginning of the novel. If you have a scene in the middle clearly in your mind – write that! Have the perfect ending? Write it out.
  • If you finish that first scene, where do you want to go next?
Do you plan to write the follow up scene after you finish the first, or do you have a couple clear scenes and plan to jump around? Do you want to write the ending and then go back to the beginning or climax scene?

Sometimes what comes next is right there and you want to continue – or a different scene popped up as you wrote the first one. Did you start the beginning and see the perfect ending? Write the ending and realized how to write the climax? Don’t be afraid to be flexible and change your follow up goal if you reach the first and have a different idea. Your mini goals are there to help you, not force you to ignore creativity when it comes.

Non-Fiction Works

If you’re writing a non-fiction story, think of how you organized it. Pick an overall goal, where to start, and what step to do next. For example: For 20 pages I want to do one gem/mineral for each page. I want to start with the 7 rocks I currently have in my collection. Then I want to do the other 11 birthday stones. The last two I will pick from the alternative birthstone lists.

Finish!

Don’t stress about the mini goals. Make sure you know where you are going to start and you can call it good!

Go to Day 7 (We start writing. Are you excited yet?)

Want an Example?

Our main goal is to have fun with the prompts the auto-generators gave us. We plan to start at the beginning, the scene of Clara cooking in the kitchen. We hope we can move on to the following scene of how Clara becomes the one to look for the hidden child, but we might skip ahead to however the Mirror of Truth works out to show them who it is. So our mini-goals looks like this:

  • Have fun and write each day
  • Complete the kitchen scene
  • Hopefully do the God retirement notice scene
  • Skip to mirror of truth reveals child’s identity

(Go back to Day 5?)
