2011 – Home Scientist – Halloween

Meeting idea – Most troops will be able to do this in a 90 minute meeting.

Dancing Ghosts

(Requirement 2)

Items needed: Tissue paper (white), Balloon, Scissors, Tape, Marker

Explore static with Ghosts!

Note: If someone has a latex allergy you can also attract small bits of tissue paper and call them mini ghosts.

Frankenstein’s Hand

(Requirement 4)

Items needed: 3 Tablespoons of Vinegar, Drinking Glass, 2 Teaspoons of baking soda, Rubber glove

Bubble up a glove instead of a balloon for a spooky effect.

Floating Ghosts

(Requirement 3)

Items needed: Dry erase markers, White ceramic plate, Water

Make ghosts float on a ceramic plate to learn about density. This experiment doesn’t always work, so you can teach them that it’s okay to fail sometimes. Practice doing this before the meeting for the best success.

Spooky Kitchen Science

(Requirement 1)

Items needed: Depends on which experiment chosen.

There are 10 Halloween themed Kitchen experiments you can try. Pick the one that fits your Troop’s needs.
Or just do Ice Cream in a Bag and use food coloring to make it Halloween fun!

Finish with a bang

(Requirement 5)

Items needed: paper cups, balloons, double sided tape, electrical tape (or thin duct tape), small piece of white card stock, sharpie marker, pom poms, sharp knife and scissors

Make Ghostly Pom Pom Shooters for the scientific toys. Explain the science of physics this toy uses, which makes it a scientific experiment!

Note: Do this one last as it’s hard to get them to stop launching pom poms once they start.

You can change any of the above experiments with a different one if you want:

If the scouts love potion making, there are many ways to do them, each focusing on different scientific aspects.
