End of October Ideas – D/B/J

When it comes to holidays, end of October is pretty popular. Juliette Gordon Low’s birthday, Halloween, Day of the Dead – all are things both younger and older scouts love to do.

Home Scientist (B)

  • Halloween themed experiments
  • Wizard themed: “potions class” and made slime, “care of magical creatures” with static electricity dragons, “transfiguration” is ice cream in a bag, play quidditch with a physics lesson

Senses (B)

STEM Career Exploration (D/B/J)

  • Explore STEM toys: Spooky senses (touching and smelling different things), candy catapults (engineering!), lava lamps (measuring, density). Then learn how people use STEM in their careers with a guest speaker or an adult dressed up like a STEM career person.

Animal Observer (D)
Could jumpstart Animal Habitats (J) to be completed at a later meeting

  • Learn about Bats and their homes and act out spooky animals. Watch bats on a video and think about why they do what they do. Make a fun bat craft and eat fruits and nuts like some bats do – or make edible bugs for them to try!

Social Butterfly (J)

  • Have a Monster Mash dinner/snack party and use table manners using your best monster voice and have a conversation starter jar and hold a monster conversation during the dinner/snack. Have fun with how breathing can make things spooky (Darth Vader!) and practice how breathing can also calm you and put you at ease. Write thank you notes to local heroes (fire, police, EMS, hospital, teachers, etc.)

Detective (J)
Could also theme it for Senses (B)

  • Arrive dressed to solve a mystery, play a themed Kim’s Game, write a code and exchange it with someone to solve it, get fingerprinted, Leaders both write the same spooky message and Scouts figure out who wrote which, and then solve the mystery of the night that the leaders set up and you’ve been getting clues all night for.
