Items needed:
- Crepe paper streamers. (For longer lasting streamers, use grosgrain ribbon with fray check on the ends.) Choose one option:
- Cut into 8-10 inch strips. Enough for 6 streamers for each scout, 3 for each hand.
- Cut into 24-36 inch strips. Enough for 2 streamers for each scout, 1 for each hand.
Note – You can attach the streamers to craft sticks or straws before the meeting to make it easier to hold and dance with.
Instructions:
- Each scout chooses streamers for their wings.
- Hold three shorter streamers in each hand or one long one in each hand
- Scouts practice moving their hand up and down to allow the streamers to flow with the motion.
- Scouts practice moving their hands in a circle to make a circle with the streamers. Allow them to try making other shapes.
- After practicing movements with streamers, turn on some music. Scouts “Fly, Fly, Away” to the music, using their streamer wings to move and dance through the air.
- Change the music every 60 seconds to a different beat. Remind the scouts to try and fly to the different rhythms.
Bonus – You can up the challenge. Before starting the music, discuss different birds and how they move. Penguins waddle and Chickens do a jump type flapping instead of flying. Humming bird wings move very different than most bird wings. Ostriches and Roadrunners speed around on the ground. Flamingos fly, but they also have a unique way of standing. What other birds and unique habits can they come up with? When the music starts, call out a different bird for each music change.
