The 1984 Daisy Girl Scout Leaders’ Guide suggests a show and tell of kitchen utensils. We’ve expanded the idea with these directions.
Before the Meeting – Each scout is tasked with the challenge of bringing one kitchen utensil in from their home kitchen (with permission of their family). The scout must know what the name of the utensil is and what it is used for. The utensil must be safe for scouts to handle and explorer – no sharp edges.
At the Meeting:
- Each scout shows the utensil she brought without saying anything about it. All the other scouts guess what the utensil is used for and what it might be called. Do not keep score of who brought the hardest to guess or coolest utensil, just have fun with the show and tell. Do not linger on them after it was guessed.
- After everyone shows their utensil off, allow all scouts to handle the different tools and explore them and talk about them.
- Have a box with a small opening that a hand could fit in. Collect all the utensils and keep them out of view. Secretly place one utensil in the box and each scout takes a turn placing their hand in the box and guessing which one it is until someone guesses correctly (one guess per scout). Then the utensil is swapped until all utensils have been guessed at.
