2011 – Space Science Explorer – Activity List

Activity Ideas

Listed under each requirement

Step 1 – Explore the Sun

Learn why the sun rises and sets and moves across the sky (day sky book, OR shadow poster).

RECOMMENDED: Make a Sundial – Learn how the sun’s position changes throughout the day by building simple sundials.

  • Build a Sun Viewer (Pinhole Projector (30–40 min)) – Safely observe the sun using a simple pinhole projector.
  • Create Sun Prints – Use sunlight to make artistic prints and explore UV exposure.
  • Day and Night Exploration – Simulate Earth’s rotation and explore light and dark.
  • Lego Shadow Experiments – Use LEGO bricks to explore how shadows change.
  • Make Shadow Art – Use shadows to create expressive artwork and observe how they change over time.
    • ((Similar to VTK/Handbook Suggestion))
Shadow Poster (20–30 min) – Trace shadows of objects or people and decorate them to explore shape and light.
  • Make a Sky Book – Observe and draw the sun at different times of day.
    • ((Similar to VTK/Handbook Suggestion))
Day Sky Book – Scouts explore how Earth’s movement creates day and night, then draw sky observations in a handmade day sky book.
  • Make a Sundial – Learn how the sun’s position changes throughout the day by building simple sundials.
  • Make a Sun-Themed Snack (Cheese and Cracker Suns (10–15 min)) – Celebrate the sun with a fun and tasty treat.
  • Play with Shadows – Turn shadows into characters and stories through imaginative play.
  • Read a Book or Watch a Video – Scouts choose and watch a video or read a book to learn facts about the sun and how it affects Earth.
  • Sun Themed Science Experiments – Explore how sunlight affects heat, growth, and transformation through hands-on investigations.

Step 2 – Observe the Moon

Look at the moon (moon observation book, OR use binoculars).

RECOMMENDED: Moon Oreo Phases – Use Oreo cookies to model the changing phases of the moon.

  • Read a Book or Watch a Video – Scouts choose and watch a video or read a book to learn facts about the moon and how changes shape.
  • Make a Moon Observation Book – Track and illustrate how the moon looks over several nights.
    • ((Similar to VTK/Handbook Suggestion))
Moon Sky Book (20–30 min) – Observe and draw the moon in the evening, at night, and in the early morning.
  • Make a Moon Related Craft – Create artistic representations of the moon using various materials.
    • ((Similar to VTK/Handbook Suggestion))
Shapes in the Moon (25–35 min) – Scouts observe the Moon and create drawings and stories based on the shapes they see on its surface.
  • Moon Oreo Phases – Use Oreo cookies to model the changing phases of the moon.
  • Moon Science Experiments – Explore the moon’s surface and properties through hands-on investigations.

Step 3 – Meet the Stars

Look at the stars in the sky (make pretend telescope, OR make a constellation with your body).

RECOMMENDED: Star-Themed Crafts (15–45 min) – Create hands-on art inspired by the stars.

  • Field Trip to See Stars – Scouts take a field trip to explore stars and space by visiting a dark outdoor area, planetarium, or space museum.
  • Find a Space STEM Guest Speaker – Scouts use a list of space role models to help choose and connect with a STEM guest speaker.
  • Make a Star Pattern (15–20 min) – Use string or tape to connect kids in star shapes, mimicking constellations with your body.
  • Make a Star Viewing Tool (15–20 min) – Make real tools to help you explore and understand the night sky, like an astronomers.
  • Make a Toy Telescope (15–30 min) – Build pretend tools to explore and observe the night sky.
  • Read a Book or Watch a Video (10–15 min) – Scouts choose and watch a video or read a book to learn facts about stars.
  • Space Trailblazers (10–15 min) – Scouts learn about a female space trailblazer by choosing a name and exploring what they did.
  • Star-Themed Crafts (15–45 min) – Create hands-on art inspired by the stars.
  • Use a Night Sky App (10–20 min) – Scouts use a night sky app or website to explore stars and constellations.
